Although I only have one "official" pet, Pukiq, I have made a few wildlife friends that visit me often. Check them out at the bottom of the page!

Pukiq, our cockatiel

Cockatiels are small parrots, related to the larger, white, cockatoos.

They are originally from Australia, and because they make such great pets, they have long been bred in captivity, like many other birds.

They are expected to live between 15 and 20 years, so we are happy that Pukiq will be part of our family for a long time.

Aahhhh...nothing like a refreshing bath on a sunny summer afternoon...

If you ever consider getting a cockatiel, beware that cockatiels need a lot of love and attention, and can become a terrible nuisance if left isolated and neglected.

They need to be handled a few hours every day and need to have their cage placed in a part of the household where they can interact with everyone, so they can feel part of the family.

As I mentioned, I also have a few wildlife friends. The one below is a Scrub Jay I named "Alfred".

Alfred Waiting For Peanuts

Western Scrub Jays have long been confused with "Blue Jays" in California. OK, they are blue and they are jays, I'll give you that, but they are not Blue Jays! In fact, there are no wild Blue Jays in the west coast! The Blue Jays usually thrive east of the Rock Mountains in the United States.

One very easy way to tell a Scrub Jay from a Blue Jay, is that the Scrub Jay has no crest.

Alfred and I became such good friends that he eats peanuts from my hand. And when I am too busy to feed him, he simply comes inside my house and helps himself...I just have to open the door!

And Alfred is not very shy, so I managed to take a few shots of him...Check out the pics below.

PUKIQ

Pukiq is our beautiful pearl cockatiel. Her egg-hatching date is May 27, 2004. Ricky gave her to me as a birthday gift on July of 2004.

She has adapted very well with us and we love her very much! She is the best birthday gift ever! :)

The natural colour of a cockatiel is grey with a yellow face and crest and with orange cheek patches. Among pet cockatiels there are lots of other colour varieties, the most popular of which are the lutino (white), pied (patches of dark and light feathers), cinnamon, and pearl.

Cockatiels are intelligent and amusing pets, which need lots of attention and can learn to perform tricks, whistle tunes, and talk. If a pet cockatiel does not have other bird buddies, he should be given the chance to regularly interact with his human friends.

Our Christmas Tree Topper
Since we don't have a tree topper yet, we got Pukiq to pose as an angel.
